Brazil's optional voting rights for specific demographics

While voting is a constitutional obligation for most Brazilians, specific groups hold the right to vote optionally. These groups include individuals aged 16 and 17, illiterate citizens, and those over the age of 70.

For some, this status represents a new phase of political engagement. For others, it offers the freedom to participate based on conviction rather than legal mandate. Examples include elderly citizens who, after decades of mandatory voting, now choose to participate only when they find candidates aligned with their interests, and young citizens who seek to use their optional status to engage with public policy and demand attention to youth-oriented issues.
