Brazil's PGR seeks to overturn removal of Federal Police Director

The Prosecutor General's Office (PGR) has issued a legal opinion supporting the annulment of the preliminary decision to remove Andrei Rodrigues from his position as Director-General of the Federal Police. The PGR's manifestation, sent to Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Luiz Edson Fachin, argues that the appointment and retention of the director fall under the authority of the President of the Republic.

The PGR contends that the removal disrupts the Federal Police chain of command and could potentially destabilize national investigations and operations. Furthermore, the document states there is no evidentiary basis linking the director to criminal organizations, which was a primary argument used to justify the suspension.

Separately, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticized Rodrigues for attending a high-cost event in London hosted by former banker Daniel Vorcaro. While Lula described the director's work as exceptional, he noted that he reprimanded Rodrigues for the trip and declined to guarantee his continuity in the role during a future administration.
