Brazil's power grid woes trigger merchant concerns in Recife and trillion‑real tariff surge

Merchants in Recife's historic centre have long complained of frequent power outages, transformer explosions and poor wiring, which they say contributed to a fire that destroyed several commercial properties on June 23. They accuse Neoenergia of inadequate maintenance, while the utility denies any structural faults in the network.

At the national level, Brazil's government and Congress have committed almost R$ 1 trillion in additional electricity costs that will be passed on to consumers through tariffs up to 2050. The bulk of the increase, R$ 546 billion, stems from the recent Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCap) and further billions come from offshore wind subsidies and extended renewable incentives. The Ministry of Mines and Energy disputes the calculation method, but analysts warn the rising costs threaten household budgets and industrial competitiveness, exacerbate solar‑generation curtailment and increase reliance on expensive thermal plants.
