Brazil's Union Progressista federation moves toward neutrality, weakening Flávio Bolsonaro's presidential bid

The federation formed by the Progressistas (PP) and União Brasil, known as União Progressista, is preparing to adopt a neutral stance in the 2026 Brazilian presidential election. The shift would withdraw formal support for senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), the former president’s son, and effectively end discussions about nominating senator Tereza Cristina (PP‑MS) as his running mate.

Party leaders cite several factors: growing tension between Flávio and PP president Ciro Nogueira after a Federal Police investigation linked Nogueira to the Banco Master scandal involving businessman Daniel Vorcaro; Flávio’s silence following the arrest of his ally, former Belford Roxo mayor Márcio Canella; and pressure from state branches that want freedom to back local candidates such as Eduardo Paes, ACM Neto or Ronaldo Caiado. By moving to neutrality, the federation will allow its members to support whichever candidates they deem most viable in their regions, potentially reshaping alliances ahead of the contest with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
