Brazil's Progressistas Party Stays Neutral as Celina Leão Secures Re‑election Bid

The Partido Progressista (PP) announced it will not hold a national convention and will remain neutral in the upcoming presidential election. The decision, confirmed on Friday, was communicated by party leader Senator Tereza Cristina, who said the party consulted its state directories and chose neutrality, foregoing any endorsement of a presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, the União Progressista federation—comprising União Brasil and the PP—held a convention in Brasília, officially confirming Governor Celina Leão as its candidate for re‑election as governor of the Distrito Federal. Leão, who assumed the governorship after Ibaneis Rocha resigned to run for the Senate, highlighted her administration’s achievements and pledged continued support for social policies, infrastructure projects, and aid for vulnerable populations. She secured backing from the MDB, PL and Podemos parties for her campaign.
