Brazil's prolonged sitting sparks health alerts and ergonomic desk demand
Medical experts warn that extensive periods of sitting can cause a range of health problems. Orthopedist Dr. João Grangeiro identified eight warning signs, including frequent back pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, leg tingling, swelling of feet and ankles, reduced flexibility, constant fatigue, weight gain and difficulty maintaining good posture. He advises standing or moving every 50‑60 minutes, stretching and regular exercise, and seeking professional evaluation for persistent symptoms.
The shift to hybrid work has increased the time people spend at desks, prompting employers and workers to look for solutions that reduce sedentary behavior. Height‑adjustable sit‑stand desks are gaining popularity in Brazil as they allow users to alternate between sitting and standing, addressing occupational health concerns such as repetitive‑strain injuries and musculoskeletal disorders. Brazilian regulations (NR‑17) and health authorities stress the need for posture variability, and ergonomists stress that no single chair is ideal; instead, the furniture should adapt to the individual. The growing demand for ergonomic furniture reflects a broader effort to improve workplace well‑being in the era of remote and hybrid work.
