Brazil STJ convicts officials in Faroeste land corruption scheme

The Special Court of the Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) has unanimously convicted five defendants in the Faroeste Operation, an investigation into a corruption and money laundering scheme involving land disputes in western Bahia.

Among those sentenced are Maria do Socorro Barreto Santiago, former president of the Bahia Court of Justice, and judge Sérgio Humberto de Quadros Sampaio. The scheme was orchestrated by Adailton Maturino dos Santos, known as a ‘false consul’ for Guinea-Bissau, who facilitated bribes to secure judicial decisions favoring agribusiness interests in disputes covering approximately 405,000 hectares.

Sentences range from 10 years and 9 months to 21 years and 7 months in initial closed prison regimes. Adailton Maturino dos Santos received 21 years and 7 months, while his wife, Geciane Maturino dos Santos, was sentenced to 16 years and 4 months. The two magistrates were also ordered to forfeit their public offices, a decision that may impact their pensions upon final judgment. The court also ordered the forfeiture of assets and values derived from the crimes to the Union.
