Brazilian Supreme Court minister Marco Buzzi faces sexual misconduct trial

The Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) scheduled a hearing for 6 August to adjudicate a disciplinary proceeding (PAD) against minister Marco Buzzi. Buzzi has been suspended from his duties since February following accusations of sexual harassment and sexual molestation. One complaint comes from an 18‑year‑old who says Buzzi tried to seize her on a beach in Santa Catarina; a second is from a former STJ staff member who alleges multiple episodes of harassment while working in his cabinet.

If the PAD finds Buzzi guilty, he could lose his position, as a recent Supreme Federal Court ruling removed compulsory retirement as the maximum penalty for serious misconduct, making dismissal possible. Buzzi’s defense argues the testimonies were taken without legal representation and has submitted a medical report on erectile dysfunction, while also seeking to have the STF halt the disciplinary process. In parallel, a criminal investigation by the STF’s prosecutorial office continues, with the Prosecutor‑General’s Office supporting the allegations.

The case is being overseen by STJ president Herman Benjamin, and a verdict could set a precedent for handling high‑level judicial misconduct in Brazil.
