Brazil's Supreme Court minister revokes ankle monitor and precautionary measures for ex‑Belford Roxo mayor

Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the immediate removal of the electronic ankle monitor and all precautionary measures imposed on former Belford Roxo mayor Márcio Correia de Oliveira (known as Márcio Canella) and on Police Sergeant Antônio Gomes da Silva Neto, who was responsible for the mayor's escort. Both men had been in provisional liberty since July 10 under those measures.

The decision follows their arrest on 7 July for alleged illegal firearm possession during the sixth phase of the Federal Police’s “Unha e Carne” operation, which investigates a suspected money‑laundering scheme involving a network of fuel stations in Rio de Janeiro and possible links to public officials. Moraes concluded that the seized weapons appear to be properly registered and that any procedural irregularities should be addressed administratively, noting no immediate criminal repercussions.

The revocation is part of the broader inquiry (Inquérito 5020) into the activities of violent criminal groups in the state of Rio de Janeiro and their alleged connections with political agents, stemming from the STF’s ruling on ADPF 635 (the “Favelas” case).
