Brazil's SUS launches campaign for viral hepatitis prevention

Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) has launched the campaign ‘Para cada hepatite, tem um cuidado’ to provide information on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of hepatitis A, B, C, and D. The SUS provides free vaccination for indicated groups, testing, monitoring, and treatment.

According to the 2026 Viral Hepatitis Epidemiological Bulletin, 2025 data shows distinct infection profiles. Hepatitis A saw its highest incidence rates among adults aged 25 to 34, with men in the 30 to 34 age group recording 7.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

In contrast, hepatitis B and C detection rates were highest among older populations, particularly men. Hepatitis B detection peaked in the 55 to 59 age group, while hepatitis C showed a strong concentration in men aged 60 or older, with 21.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2025, 5,921 cases of hepatitis C were confirmed in individuals over 60, the highest number across all age groups. Health officials warn that hepatitis B and C can remain asymptomatic for years, potentially leading to chronic complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
