Brazil's SUS vaccinates over 1 million children with Pneumo 20
Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) has vaccinated over 1 million children under the age of five with the Pneumo 20 vaccine since the national strategy began in June. Health Minister Alexandre Padilha announced the milestone during a visit to health services in Montes Claros.
The Pneumo 20 vaccine protects against 20 serotypes of the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium, offering broader protection against diseases such as pneumonia and meningitis compared to previous options. The Ministry of Health stated that the Pneumo 20 vaccine will gradually replace the Pneumo 10 vaccine in the national immunization schedule. During this transition, existing stocks of Pneumo 10 will continue to be used, resulting in a temporary combination of both vaccines in the schedule.
This expansion aims to reduce hospitalizations and mortality rates in vulnerable populations. According to Ministry of Health data, Brazil recorded 4,600 cases of pneumococcal meningitis and 1,400 deaths between 2023 and 2025, representing a 30% lethality rate. Within the under-five age group, 589 cases and 187 deaths were documented during that period.
