Brazil's SUS vaccinates over 1 million children with Pneumo 20
Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) has vaccinated over 1 million children under the age of five with the Pneumo 20 vaccine since the national vaccination strategy began in June. Health Minister Alexandre Padilha announced the milestone during a visit to Montes Claros, Minas Gerais.
The Pneumo 20 vaccine provides expanded protection against 20 serotypes of the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium, targeting severe illnesses such as pneumonia and meningitis. The Ministry of Health stated that the new vaccine will gradually replace the Pneumo 10 version in the national immunization schedule. During this transition, both vaccines will be used simultaneously to utilize existing stocks.
The initiative aims to reduce hospitalizations and mortality rates in early childhood. Between 2023 and 2025, Brazil recorded 4,600 cases of pneumococcal meningitis and 1,400 deaths from the disease, with a 30% lethality rate. Among children under five, there were 589 cases and 187 deaths during that period.
