TCU identifies serious irregularities in 15 Brazilian public works

The Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has identified signs of serious irregularities in 15 out of 24 public works audited under the Fiscobras 2026 program. The audit covered projects involving approximately R$ 6.1 billion in resources, with a budget allocation of roughly R$ 4.37 billion. All audited projects received federal funding during the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The most severe case involves the Teresina Metro in Piauí. Technical units have proposed a suspension of the project due to evidence of overpricing and duplicate items in the contracted budget. The federal government has invested approximately R$ 500 million in the Teresina Metro, and potential losses to public coffers are estimated at R$ 40.72 million.

While 14 projects showed serious irregularities that do not prevent their continuation, the final classification of the Teresina Metro as a case requiring suspension depends on a specific court decision. Additionally, the audit of the Angra 3 Thermonuclear Power Plant was excluded from the Fiscobras 2026 list because the National Energy Policy Council has not yet decided on the project's continuity.
