Brazil's Tocantins and Portugal warn of heat‑related health risks
In Brazil's Tocantins state, nephrologist Winglerson dos Santos Cordeiro warned that the intense, dry heat and river‑beach season increase risks for people with chronic kidney disease, especially those on dialysis. He advised patients to moderate fluid intake, use cooling strategies, and follow dietary limits to avoid complications such as hypertension, pulmonary edema, and dehydration.
In Portugal, nutritionist Patrícia Eusébio addressed common myths during a heatwave, recommending individualized water consumption (about 30 ml per kilogram of body weight) and cautioning against excessive rapid intake that could cause hyponatremia. She noted that cold water is generally safe, isotonic drinks are only needed for prolonged intense exercise, and alcohol can worsen dehydration.
