Brazil's TSE implements security audits and disinformation tools for 2026 elections

The Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is implementing various security and auditing measures in preparation for the 2026 General Elections. According to TSE Resolution No. 23.673/2021, the electoral systems undergo rigorous inspection, including access to source codes, integrity tests, and authenticity verifications both before and after the election process.

A key component of this security is the digital signing and sealing of electoral systems. During the sealing ceremony, systems are compiled, digitally signed by TSE officials and authorized entities, and recorded onto non-rewritable media. These are then stored in secure vaults. Digital hashes are generated to ensure that any unauthorized changes to the executable files can be immediately identified.

In addition to technical security, the TSE has updated its ‘Fato ou Boato’ (Fact or Rumor) platform to combat disinformation. The revamped site serves as a central hub for verified information, educational content, and fact-checking results provided by a network of partners, including AFP, Agência Lupa, and Aos Fatos. The platform aims to help citizens identify false news by providing tools to search for verified content and offering guidance on how to scrutinize news sources.
