Brazil elections face AI disinformation and TSE legal battles
The 2026 Brazilian election cycle is facing significant challenges from artificial intelligence and digital disinformation. A report by the Instituto Democracia em Xeque revealed a network of 255 Instagram profiles acting as 'content farms.' These profiles used AI-generated content to publish over 1,200 posts, accumulating 58 million views and 5 million engagements to promote far-right agendas and attack the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
In response to various digital campaign tactics, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has issued several rulings. TSE President Kassio Nunes Marques ordered President Lula to remove a video discussing the Banco Master scandal, citing the improper use of official presidential symbols and locations for campaign purposes. Additionally, the court ordered the removal of an AI-generated video from Romeu Zema's campaign that depicted political opponents in prison settings, and a video from Flávio Bolsonaro that used deepfake technology to falsely link Lula's son to financial crimes.
Furthermore, the Workers' Party (PT) has petitioned the STF to investigate potential foreign interference in the elections, specifically regarding paid advertisements on X and the platform Polymarket.
