Samara Martins named Unidade Popular presidential candidate for Brazil
On 26 July 2026 the left‑wing party Unidade Popular (UP) formalised its presidential ticket at a national convention held at the Universidade Zumbi dos Palmares in São Paulo. The party announced dentist Samara Martins – a SUS health worker and activist in Black and women’s movements – as its candidate for President of the Republic. Formerly the vice‑presidential nominee on Leonardo Péricles’ 2022 ticket, Martins is now leading a 100 %‑female slate with port‑worker union leader Raquel Brício as vice‑presidential candidate. Brício, a union president from Pará, co‑founded the Movimento de Mulheres Olga Benário.
The programme presented by Martins calls for the re‑nationalisation of privatised companies, the nationalisation of strategic wealth, a larger federal budget for social programmes, an audit of public debt and a temporary suspension of debt payments to redirect resources to public services. Additional proposals include expanding public hiring, criminalising misogyny, mandatory gender‑education in schools and stricter regulation of social‑media platforms.
UP, which did not meet the electoral‑threshold clause in 2022, hopes the historic all‑women ticket will boost its visibility and mobilise grassroots support ahead of the 2026 presidential election.
