Research presented by Fiocruz and the Federal University of Minas Gerais found that 42% of Brazilian older adults fear falling on sidewalks because of poor pavement, and 20.9% reported a fall in the past year. Responsibility for sidewalk maintenance rests with property owners, while municipal authorities are tasked with oversight, but enforcement is often lacking. The study links urban design flaws to structural ageism, noting that compact, walkable “15‑minute city” models could improve mobility for seniors and other groups.

In a separate incident in Balsas, Maranhão, police rescued a 79‑year‑old woman found in extreme neglect, malnutrition, and unsanitary conditions within her home. The victim was taken to a hospital for medical care, and her granddaughter, who had been responsible for her care, was arrested for abandonment and mistreatment. The case underscores the urgent need for stronger reporting and protection mechanisms for vulnerable older adults in Brazil.
