Brazil's yellow electricity flag hikes costs, drives Niterói solar park launch

The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) announced that the tariff flag for July 2026 will remain yellow, adding an extra R$0.01885 per kilowatt‑hour to consumer bills. The yellow flag reflects reduced water levels in reservoirs and the need to run higher‑cost thermal plants.

In response, municipalities and private consumers are expanding photovoltaic installations. The city of Niterói inaugurated the Parque Solar do Morro da Boa Vista, a R$7.7 million project with more than 2,000 solar modules expected to generate 150,000‑165,000 kWh monthly and save the municipal budget about R$1.6 million annually.

EcoPower CEO Anderson Oliveira said the regulatory uncertainty accelerates the shift to solar, noting that rooftop panels can cut dependence on the grid by up to 95% and provide long‑term cost stability for households and businesses.
