Brazlândia literary sarau celebrates reading of Socorro Acioli work
Approximately 50 elderly participants attended a literary sarau in Brazlândia to celebrate the conclusion of the reading of ‘A Cabeça do Santo’ by writer Socorro Acioli. The event marked the end of the 14th edition of the Arvoreando Saberes Book Club, a project held at the Centro de Convivência e Fortalecimento de Vínculos (Cecon).
The two-month program included shared readings, discussions, and artistic activities. The closing event featured videos of the locations that inspired the book, interviews with the author, a trivia game, a collective cordel poem summarizing the work, and an exhibition of head sculptures created during reading workshops. To enhance the experience, the venue was decorated with thematic elements and served traditional dishes mentioned in the book, such as baião de dois and cuscuz.
To ensure inclusivity for elderly participants who may face literacy or visual challenges, social educators adapt each book into audiobooks and radio plays using various voices and sound effects. According to Cecon head Daniele Menezes, the project aims to democratize access to literature, strengthen community ties, and provide cognitive stimulation while reducing stress and anxiety.
