Brazoria County residents oppose CleanSpark data center project

Residents in Damon, Brazoria County, Texas, are expressing opposition to a potential large-scale data center project. The concerns follow the acquisition of more than 400 acres of land along the Brazos River by CleanSpark, a company that describes itself as a Bitcoin mining and data center developer.

During a recent community meeting, locals voiced fears regarding the environmental and lifestyle impacts of the facility, including constant noise, light pollution, and vibrations from potential gas turbines. Community members also emphasized the project's threat to local wildlife, historical sites, and the preservation of Black family heritage tied to the land.

Experts noted that Texas counties often have limited regulatory tools to prevent such developments, particularly in unincorporated areas where permitting hurdles are minimal. CleanSpark previously announced an agreement to acquire up to 447 acres to position itself for a large-scale data center development.
