Bärbel Bas questions mandatory first-day sick leave certificates
German Labor Minister Bärbel Bas has publicly questioned a coalition plan to mandate medical certificates for sick leave starting from the first day of illness. Although Bas stated she remains 'coalition-loyal', she expressed significant doubts regarding the utility of the policy, noting that numerous planned exceptions for specific sectors might render the mandate ineffective.
The proposal was part of a broader reform package agreed upon by the SPD and the Union (CDU/CSU) during recent meetings. Bas noted that the SPD had reluctantly agreed to the requirement in exchange for avoiding the elimination of waiting days or cuts to continued wage payments. She also indicated she would withhold implementation proposals until Health Minister Carsten Linnemann provides further regulations, specifically regarding doctor appointment guarantees required to support the measure.
The plan has faced sharp criticism from other political leaders. Felix Banaszak of the Greens described the mandate as 'nonsense' that would burden doctors and increase healthcare costs, while representatives from the Left party argued it reflects a lack of trust in employees. Conversely, members of the Union faction, such as Marc Biadacz, maintain that the agreement is a settled part of a larger package intended to modernize Germany's social system and ensure economic growth.
