Bread beetles and larvae pose risks to food and household items

Bread beetle larvae can cause significant damage to various household goods. While the beetles do not transmit diseases and are not considered dangerous to humans, their larvae consume a wide range of items beyond grain products.

According to the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (Laves), the larvae also feed on chocolate, tea, sugar, bouillon cubes, and dog treats. They can even damage household items like grain pillows and wallpaper paste. The German Historical Museum notes that historical books and papers are also at risk, leading to the beetle's nickname, “bookworm.”

Infestations can be identified by the presence of webs, sticky residues, or pinhead-sized holes in paper and cardboard packaging. Prevention is difficult because larvae can bite through small cracks and even through sealed foil or cardboard packaging. Maintaining temperatures below 18 degrees Celsius is suggested as a preventative measure.
