Breast cancer and BRCA mutation risks highlight mental health needs

The physical challenges of breast cancer and preventative measures for hereditary risks often carry significant psychological consequences. For individuals with the BRCA1 mutation, such as Bhano Persaud in Guyana, undergoing elective double mastectomies for cancer prevention can lead to intense feelings of loneliness, grief over body changes, and a need for specialized counseling and support groups.

Beyond preventative surgery, a breast cancer diagnosis itself impacts mental health. Data indicates that approximately one in four people with breast cancer experience depression, while more than 40% experience anxiety. These mental health challenges can be triggered by the initial diagnosis, the uncertainty of waiting for test results, or the physical side effects of treatment, such as early menopause or concerns regarding infertility.
