Breast cancer awareness highlights screening gaps and younger diagnoses
During Pink October, health awareness efforts are highlighting the critical importance of breast cancer screening and the increasing prevalence of the disease among younger women.
In Luxembourg, more than 400 new cases are reported annually. The case of 29-year-old Marie Alvarado illustrates that the disease is not limited to those over 50. Despite having no family history and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Alvarado was diagnosed after discovering a lump that grew over two months, eventually requiring chemotherapy.
In Belgium, the Agency for a Quality Life (Aviq) reports that only 50% of women undergo screening, falling short of the 75% target. A significant disparity exists between regions; systematic screening participation in Wallonia is approximately 4.3%, compared to over 49% in Flanders. Health officials emphasize that early detection through mammograms significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.
