Breast cancer awareness initiatives expand in Macau and Phuket
Community-led and professional initiatives are increasing breast cancer awareness and prevention efforts in Macau and Phuket.
In Macau, small businesses, survivors, and community groups are driving visibility for the cause. The Health Bureau’s Cancer Registration System reported 291 new cases and 55 deaths in 2023, with breast cancer remaining the most common cancer among women in the region. Local efforts, including campaigns by Lord Stow’s and educational initiatives by the International Ladies’ Club of Macau, emphasize early detection through self-examinations, clinical exams, and mammography. The five-year relative survival rate in Macau was previously reported at 88.5%.
In Phuket, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) hosted a “Let’s Beat Breast Cancer” rally. The campaign focuses on lifestyle interventions to lower risk, specifically advocating for a whole-food, plant-based diet, regular physical activity, weight management, and limited alcohol consumption. The event included community engagement through music and cooking classes to provide practical guidance on nutrition and long-term wellness.
