Breast cancer awareness and screening trends in Greece
In Greece, breast cancer remains a significant public health concern, with approximately 8,700 to 9,000 new diagnoses and 2,400 deaths reported annually. Medical experts emphasize that early diagnosis is critical, noting that the five-year survival rate exceeds 91% generally and over 99% for cases detected in the early stages.
Medical professionals highlight the importance of personalized screening, particularly for women with dense breast tissue, which can obscure tumors during standard mammography. Recommendations include supplemental ultrasounds or magnetic mammography depending on tissue density and family history. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, are expected to further enhance risk prediction and personalized preventative care.
In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Panathinaikos BC has partnered with YGEIA Hospital and White Veil to promote early detection. The initiative includes symbolic gestures by players and staff, as well as a ‘Pink Reminder Cam’ providing free check-ups to fans at the Telekom Center Athens.
