Breast cancer awareness efforts emphasize early detection and treatment risks

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, various medical institutions and health organizations are emphasizing the importance of early detection and the complexities of treatment. The Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center has illuminated its building in pink to symbolize support for those facing a diagnosis.

Medical experts highlight that early detection through regular mammograms and self-examinations can be critical. Potential warning signs include new lumps, swelling, skin dimpling, nipple retraction, or skin changes on the breast or nipple. While the American Cancer Society recommends women at average risk begin annual mammograms between ages 45 and 55, some may start as early as 40.

Recent research also points to the risks of cardiovascular toxicity, where standard treatments such as certain chemotherapies, targeted drugs, and radiotherapy can damage the heart and circulatory system. This has led to the emergence of cardio-oncology as a medical specialty to monitor and protect patients' heart health during cancer treatment.
