Breast cancer cases reported in Mérida and Ayacucho

In Venezuela, 44 women were diagnosed with breast cancer over the last year in the Andean region, with 19 cases treated by the Sociedad Anticancerosa in Mérida and 25 in El Vigía. Dr. Breida Araque, president of the Sociedad Anticancerosa of Mérida, noted that early diagnosis offers up to a 95% chance of recovery. Medical protocols following identification include immunohistochemistry tests, CT scans, and ultrasounds to determine specific cancer types.

In Peru, the Regional Hospital in Ayacucho reported that breast cancer is the leading cause of chemotherapy treatments, with 93 cases recorded between January and September 2026. Cervical cancer followed with 47 cases. While the hospital has provided eight oncology hospitalization beds, patients requiring radiotherapy or brachytherapy may still require referrals to Lima or Huancayo.
