Breast cancer detection rates in Colombia

In Colombia, early detection of breast cancer remains a critical health priority. According to data from the Cuenta de Alto Costo, 54% of breast cancer cases in 2024 were detected in early stages. However, regional disparities persist, with the Amazonía-Orinoquía and Caribbean regions performing below the national average.

To address information gaps, the initiative ‘El cuidado lo llevamos en el pecho’ provides guidance on prevention, self-care, and timely detection. Ana María Bravo, Medical Director for Lilly Colombia, emphasized that information should empower people to act rather than live in fear, facilitating necessary conversations with healthcare professionals.

Health experts note that a lack of family history does not eliminate risk. The World Health Organization reports that approximately 80% of breast cancer cases occur in women without specific risk factors other than sex and age.
