Breast cancer rates rise globally with increasing impact on younger women

Global breast cancer cases have risen from 2.09 million in 2018 to over 2.3 million in 2022, according to GLOBOCAN epidemiological reports. Medical experts note a concerning trend where the disease is increasingly affecting younger women, specifically those in their 20s and 30s, with the rate of increase in women under 40 significantly outpacing older age groups.

Medical professionals, including Dr. Chang Yu-Chin and Dr. Norihiro Sato, highlight that while genetics play a role, diet significantly impacts hormone levels, inflammation, and cellular repair. Experts advise limiting five specific types of foods to reduce risk, most notably fatty red meats and processed meats such as sausages, bacon, and ham. High intake of saturated fats can increase estrogen production, which is closely linked to hormone-dependent breast cancer.

Additionally, high consumption of sugary foods and beverages is identified as a risk factor. Sugar can elevate insulin and IGF-1 levels, which may promote abnormal cell growth. Research suggests that consuming 100ml of sugary drinks daily can increase overall cancer risk.
