Breast cancer research highlights GLP-1 benefits and precision medicine

New research and clinical developments are reshaping the landscape of breast cancer treatment and prevention. A study presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting involving over 110,000 women suggests that GLP-1 medications, commonly used for obesity and type 2 diabetes, may be linked to a 30% lower risk of developing breast cancer.

While the study led by Dr. Elizabeth McDonald of the University of Pennsylvania is observational and does not definitively confirm a causal link, it suggests these drugs could serve as potential cancer prevention tools. Multisite clinical trials are being prepared to further investigate these findings.

In clinical practice, the focus is shifting toward precision medicine and individualized care. Experts, including Professor Lin Ying from the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, note that advancements in identifying molecular subtypes—such as HER2-low and ultra-low expression—are allowing for more effective targeted therapies like antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and pathway inhibitors. This evolution aims to move breast cancer management toward a chronic disease model, prioritizing both survival and the quality of life for patients.
