Breast cancer screening and the impact of breast density

Breast cancer screening through mammograms is essential for early detection, which can improve survival rates and potentially reduce the intensity of required treatments. Medical experts recommend that women begin regular mammograms at age 40, with screenings occurring annually or every two to three years, depending on individual risk factors and local guidelines.

Breast density, a measure of fibroglandular tissue relative to fat tissue, can complicate the screening process. Because both fibrous and glandular tissues appear difficult to see on X-rays, dense breast tissue can make it harder to detect abnormalities. While women with dense breast tissue face a higher risk of breast cancer, medical organizations advise that mammograms remain necessary as many cancers are still detectable through these exams.
