Breast cancer screening awareness initiatives launched in Belgium and the Netherlands

Health authorities and local organizations in Belgium and the Netherlands are launching initiatives to increase breast cancer screening participation and awareness.

In Aalst, Belgium, the AZORG Breast Clinic, the city, and the Lenabeau support group are organizing a pink-themed awareness campaign. This follows reports showing that 36.1% of women in Aalst do not participate in preventive screenings, a rate that falls below the Flemish target of 75%. The campaign aims to emphasize the importance of early detection through mammography, particularly for women aged 50 to 69, though it also targets younger and older demographics.

In the Netherlands, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is utilizing an interactive “choice wall” to help women make informed decisions about screening. Following deployments in Landgraaf and Enschede, the installation has arrived in Bergen op Zoom. The tool provides information on the pros and cons of the procedure, addressing common concerns such as pain and the certainty of results, to ensure women can make personal decisions based on facts rather than assumptions.
