Breast cancer treatment advances and importance of early detection in Japan

Advancements in breast cancer treatment and the importance of early detection and appearance care are being highlighted in Japan. Medical professionals note that treatment is becoming increasingly personalized through the use of molecular targeted drugs, antibody-drug conjugates, and immune checkpoint inhibitors. Genetic testing, such as the HBOC test, is also expanding its coverage to include family members of positive patients, allowing for better-informed surgical and medicinal decisions.

As treatments evolve, the nature of patient care is shifting. While hospital stays for surgery are becoming shorter, outpatient chemotherapy and long-term preventative treatments are becoming more common. This shift necessitates a re-evaluation of insurance coverage, moving from daily hospitalization benefits toward monthly benefits and lump-sum payments to support long-term recovery and income loss.

Public awareness is also being driven by personal testimonies. Model Anna Umemiya, who is currently undergoing treatment for Stage 3A invasive lobular carcinoma, spoke at a recent event about the physical and psychological challenges of chemotherapy. She emphasized the necessity of immediate medical consultation upon discovering symptoms and the importance of 'appearance care'—managing physical changes like hair loss through methods such as art makeup to maintain quality of life during treatment.
