Breastfeeding Support Initiatives Highlighted During National Breastfeeding Month
During August's National Breastfeeding Month, health providers emphasized resources for new mothers. Desert Regional Medical Center offers breastfeeding classes, seven‑day lactation support, hands‑on assistance, and donor milk for infants whose mothers face supply challenges. Staff member Farah Grammer, a longtime employee and mother, says the program aims to ensure mothers do not face the lack of support she experienced.
Dr. Brenda Ross‑Shelton of UC Riverside Health discussed the scientific benefits of breastfeeding for infants and mothers, addressed common myths, and outlined typical challenges such as perceived low milk supply and pain. She highlighted that breastfeeding reduces risks of certain cancers, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease for mothers, and supports infant nutrition, immune health, and brain development, especially for premature or medically vulnerable babies.
