New research suggests that breathing patterns significantly influence brain activity, cognitive functions, and decision-making processes. Studies led by institutions including the University of California San Diego and the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke have identified a complex connection between respiratory rhythms and neural patterns.
One study found that slow breathing with prolonged exhalations increases heart rate variability and makes the brain more sensitive to rewards, which can lead to riskier decision-making.
