Breel Embolo discusses controversial World Cup red card

Breel Embolo has addressed his controversial red card during Switzerland’s World Cup quarter-final against Argentina. The dismissal occurred after Embolo received a second yellow card for alleged simulation following an incident involving Argentina’s Leandro Paredes. While the referee initially booked Paredes, a VAR review led to Embolo being sent off for attempting to deceive officials.

Speaking during his presentation as a new Atlanta United player following an $18 million move from Rennes, Embolo expressed the anger felt within the Swiss camp. He noted that the team believed they could have won the match had they remained at full strength.

Following the tournament, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) clarified that its ‘mistaken identity’ protocol was not intended for cases involving alleged simulation. Embolo stated that this clarification does not change his perspective on the loss, emphasizing his competitive nature and the pain of the defeat.
