Breel Embolo dropped from Swiss squad over fake Covid certificates
The Swiss Football Association has excluded striker Breel Embolo from the national team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. This decision follows revelations that Embolo was sanctioned in November 2025 for using forged Covid-19 certificates during the pandemic. Embolo, who plays for Atlanta United, has accepted responsibility for his actions, stating he understood his behavior was incorrect.
Embolo is the second high-profile Swiss player to be removed from the squad this week due to similar scandals. Captain Granit Xhaka was also dropped after admitting to using a forged Covid-19 vaccination certificate to avoid mandatory vaccination requirements. While Xhaka's case is still under review, Embolo's legal proceedings regarding the falsification of documents have already been finalized, resulting in a fine and a suspended prison sentence.
The absence of both Embolo and Xhaka leaves the Swiss national team significantly weakened as they begin their Nations League campaign, which includes matches against North Macedonia, Scotland, and Slovenia.
