Bregenz Festival launches 80th edition with La Traviata premiere

The Bregenz Festival opened its 80th edition on the lake stage with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata, directed by Damiano Michieletto. The production features a massive 28‑metre high mirror sculpture composed of 86 glass elements that reflect the fragility of the heroine Violetta and serve as a projection surface.

The lake‑front venue, known for its monumental sets, expects up to 200,000 visitors across 28 performances through August, with around 6,700 spectators per show under open‑air conditions. Staff are preparing for weather challenges to ensure the shows run smoothly despite wind or rain.

This staging marks the first time La Traviata has been performed at the Bregenz water stage in the festival’s eight‑decade history, combining classic repertoire with a visually striking set that evokes the golden twenties and themes of vulnerability.
