Bregenz premieres dystopian music theater ‘Passion of the Common Man’

The Bregenzer Werkstattbühne in Austria staged the music‑theatre work ‘Passion of the Common Man’, a stark vision of a near future where pain is eliminated by drugs, humans are designed by AI, and food is lab‑grown. The piece contrasts this engineered utopia with memories of a pre‑‘cliff’ world through three fictional figures – farmer Jacques Imbrailo, who longs for the feel of soil; Emma Kajander, who recreates an ideal lover with algorithms; and Aaron Godfrey‑Mayes, a sick man who wishes to experience real pain on humanity’s behalf.

The work was composed and conducted by Daniel Bjanrnason, with a libretto by Royce Vavrek. Mezzosoprano Anne Sofie von Otter served as “Master of Ceremonies”, guiding the choir and audience through a ritual that culminates in the symbolic death of a human representative. Critics described the performance as shocking and thought‑provoking, highlighting how close contemporary technology feels to the dystopian scenario portrayed.
