Bregenz Festspiele stages Verdi’s La Traviata with giant broken‑mirror set

The 2026 Bregenz Festspiele in Austria opened its lake stage with Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, presented for the first time on the venue’s floating platform. Italian director Damiano Michieletto staged the opera in a Roaring Twenties setting and commissioned a massive set piece designed by Paolo Fantin: a 30‑metre, 300‑ton mirror sculpture that shatters into 86 shards, symbolising Violetta’s broken soul. The production, costing about €10 million, is conducted by Kirill Karabits and features the Wiener Symphoniker, the Prague Philharmonic Choir and a high‑profile solo cast. The shattered mirror rises from Lake Constance each night, creating a striking visual that ties the historic drama to contemporary spectacle.
