Bremen Airport faces 13 million euro deficit and insolvency risk

Bremen Airport is facing a growing structural deficit that has reached approximately 13 million euros, up from an initial estimate of 9.6 million euros. Kai Stüchrenberg, chairman of the supervisory board of Flughafen Bremen GmbH, has stated that insolvency cannot be ruled out, though efforts are underway to avoid it.

Several factors contribute to the financial strain, including high location costs in Germany, rising kerosene prices, a decrease in business travel, and the loss of Lufthansa's connection to Frankfurt. To address the crisis, the airport is considering restructuring its shareholder model to attract private capital, as the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is currently the sole shareholder.

Management is also negotiating with Lufthansa to resume Frankfurt flights, potentially offering discounts on airport fees to incentivize the return. While no layoffs are currently planned, the airport intends to reduce costs by not automatically refilling vacant positions. The timeline for necessary savings has also been accelerated, moving from a 2028 target to the end of 2027.
