Bremen and Hamburg expand public sector training programs

German cities Bremen and Hamburg are expanding their professional training programs to bolster public sector workforce capabilities.

In Bremen, 174 new trainees are beginning apprenticeships or dual study programs across 25 different fields. These roles span sectors including justice, medicine, environmental technology, and general administration. Mayor and Finance Senator Björn Fecker noted that these new recruits bring fresh ideas and digital competence to the public service.

Hamburg is increasing its capacity for dual studies in social work, with 55 students starting a Bachelor’s program this semester. This expansion aims to address the rising demand for social pedagogical specialists. The program involves cooperation between the city and the Protestant University of Applied Sciences for Social Work & Diakonie, with students rotating through district offices and various municipal authorities.
