Bremen court releases mother after attempted arson of children

A court in Bremen has ruled that a 40-year-old mother, who attempted to set herself and her two sons on fire in a supermarket in January, is not criminally responsible due to severe mental illness. The Landgericht Bremen determined that the woman was suffering from a severe depressive episode with psychotic delusions at the time of the incident, believing that people were trying to take her children away.

During the incident at a Marktkauf supermarket, the woman poured methylated spirits over herself and her children and attempted to use a lighter. Witnesses intervened to prevent the fire. One child required surgery for skin blistering caused by the spirits, though no permanent physical damage was reported.

The court has suspended her forensic psychiatric confinement for a five-year probation period. As part of this arrangement, she will transition from a day clinic to outpatient treatment and is permitted to return to her children. She must take medication under supervision, and the family will receive support from youth welfare services and crisis intervention teams. The judge noted that the woman is a loving mother whose actions were driven by a fateful mental illness rather than criminal intent, adding that probation will be revoked immediately if further crimes occur.
