Bremen Dismisses Jobcenter Employee After ZDF Bürgergeld Documentary

The city of Bremen terminated Fred Göcken, a 60‑year‑old Jobcenter employee of more than 15 years, after he appeared in a ZDF documentary that criticised the Bürgergeld system. In the program “Am Puls mit Sarah Tacke – System Bürgergeld: Leben ohne Leistung”, Göcken claimed the Jobcenter’s core task was merely “paying out money”, suggested that 30‑40 % of applicants falsify information, and warned of the system’s financial strain.

Bremen’s administration said Göcken had defamed the Jobcenter and destroyed trust, noting that public‑service criticism must remain factual and constructive. The Jobcenter spokesperson warned against blanket judgments despite acknowledging occasional false claims. Göcken rejected the firing and announced plans to challenge the decision before a labour court, a dispute that could extend beyond Bremen and raise questions about the limits of free speech for civil servants.
