Bremen food hygiene violations lead to multiple business closures

Food hygiene violations in Bremen have been increasing, leading to several temporary business closures in the first half of 2026. According to data from the Senate, ten establishments were closed during this period, including a Haus des Döners franchise, the Theater am Goetheplatz, and Leo's Abenteuerpark.

Commonly identified issues include mold deposits, rodent droppings in food storage areas, and inadequate cleaning of work equipment. Specific instances involved Pizza Hut at the Waterfront and the Werder-Imbiss in Steintor, which faced repeated issues regarding improper food storage and cooling.

Statistics show a rising trend in enforcement actions. In 2025, the Food Monitoring, Animal Welfare and Veterinary Service (LMTVet) initiated 169 fine proceedings and imposed total fines of 114,037 euros. In the first half of 2026 alone, 77 fine proceedings were started and 34,054 euros in fines were levied. While permanent closures are not legally possible under food safety laws, businesses must rectify all identified deficiencies before being allowed to reopen after a temporary closure.
