Germany celebrates German Unity Day with festivities in Bremen and Point Alpha
Germany is celebrating the Day of German Unity with major festivities in Bremen and at the Point Alpha memorial. As the current holder of the Bundesrat presidency, Bremen is hosting a citizen festival under the motto ‘Many Strengths – One Country,’ with over 700 events planned and approximately 400,000 visitors expected.
The official celebrations in Bremen include an ecumenical service at St. Petri Cathedral featuring leaders from German constitutional bodies and churches. High-profile political figures, including President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, are expected to attend the official ceremony.
Simultaneously, commemorations are held at the Point Alpha memorial on the former inner-German border between Hesse and Thuringia. The event includes a formal ceremony featuring Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer and representatives from various state ministries.
In Fürstenwalde, the celebrations are marked by tension as planned appearances by AfD leader Björn Höcke have prompted anti-AfD protests, leading to a significant police presence in the region.
