Bremen implements geothermal and waste-heat heating projects

Various heating transition initiatives are underway in Bremen, Germany, focusing on renewable and recovered heat sources.

A citizens' cooperative is preparing to establish a cold district heating network in a residential quarter. This system will provide geothermal energy to individual heat pumps. A research project conducted by Energiekonsens and Hochschule Bremen, which ran from June 2024 to July 2026, confirmed the technical feasibility of this model through simulations and probe drilling. The project received approximately 170,000 euros in funding from the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt.

In a separate development, Klinikum Bremen-Nord has transitioned its heating and hot water supply from natural gas to district heating. Since June 2026, the hospital has been utilizing waste heat from a thermal waste recovery plant operated by hkw blumenthal GmbH. Distributed by enercity, this switch is expected to replace 7.7 million kilowatt-hours of natural gas annually and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1,500 tons per year.
