Bremen investor plans billion-euro waste heat project

Investor Klaus Meier is planning a multi-billion euro project to provide district heating to households in Bremen using waste heat from the local ArcelorMittal steel plant. The proposal involves distributing heat through a network of pipes to replace fossil fuels and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Bremen Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte has expressed support for the initiative, noting its potential for climate protection. While the exact amount of CO2 savings depends on the number of connected consumers, the Mayor anticipates a reduction of many tens of thousands of tons annually. To ensure reliability in the event of production halts at the steel plant, Meier is considering additional heat sources such as sewage treatment plants and river water. Discussions are currently ongoing between the Senate, the investor, and ArcelorMittal to clarify technical details and assess economic viability.
