Bremen jobcenter whistleblower alleges widespread welfare fraud

Fred Göcken, a 60‑year‑old former employee of the Bremen jobcenter, was dismissed after appearing in a ZDF documentary that criticised the German Bürgergeld system. In a subsequent BILD podcast he repeated his allegations, claiming that 30‑40 % of able‑bodied benefit recipients provide false information to obtain benefits, that jobcenters are under pressure to spend their budgets – "the money must go out, no matter how" – and that staff handle hundreds of cases each, limiting effective enforcement of sanctions.

Senator for Labour and Social Affairs Claudia Schilling (SPD) rejected Göcken's statements, saying they lack factual basis and that the alleged fraud rates are unfounded. The controversy highlights ongoing debates about the administration and oversight of Germany's welfare scheme.
